Methamphetamine has other street names like meth, speed, crystal, glass, and crank. Methamphetamine is chemically related to amphetamine, which causes the baby and mothers heart rate to increase. Amphetamine is a medication commonly used to help people focus like ADHD children or someone that suffers from narcolepsy. Similarly seen in cocaine, this can cause the baby to lose oxygen. This leads to low birth weight, increases the mother’s chances of premature labor, miscarriage, and placental abruption. The baby can go through withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, sleeplessness, muscle spasms, and feeding problems. Other withdrawal symptoms are sensitive to light, noise, and touch and may cry nonstop for hours. Getting high off this drug might feel wonderful to the mother but, they are sending the drug directly through their bloodstream right to their baby.
